Breakfast with the Hummingbirds

It's truly a delightful sight to witness the return of our hummingbirds for another season! One of the simple pleasures that never fails to brighten my day is enjoying a leisurely breakfast accompanied by a steaming cup of coffee outside on the porch, while being mesmerized by the delightful presence of these tiny creatures.

Most mornings in the summer I take my coffee and breakfast out on the porch to join the hummingbirds getting their breakfast from the feeder and garden flowers. They are mesmerizing.

There are many different symbolisms for the hummingbird. One of my favorites is that this spirit animal symbolizes the enjoyment of life and lightness of being. Those who have the hummingbird as a totem are invited to enjoy the sweetness of life, lift up negativity wherever it creeps in and express love more fully in their daily endeavors.

Most mornings I enjoy sitting on my front porch drinking a cup of coffee and watching these amazing hummingbirds dart in and out. It's incredible how these tiny beings pack so much powerful, positive energy.

Sometimes they come very close as if they have something to say. It’s a beautiful and meditative way to start my day. I love this I found about lessons from a hummingbird. Video by flowers? Link to cards.

Sometimes they will pause in their flight and gracefully ascend onto the porch, coming to a stop before fixing their gaze directly on me. In those moments, they draw remarkably near, creating an exhilarating thrill that lingers in the air.

I'm so happy that my little friends have returned for the summer! Here are a few facts I found about these amazing little birds..
Many hummingbirds spend the winter in Central America or Mexico.

Some migrating hummingbirds start their spring migration from as far south as Panama, about 4,150 miles away from Michigan.

During migration, a hummingbird's heart beats up to 1,260 times a minute, and its wings flap 15 to 80 times a second.

To support this high energy level, a hummingbird will typically gain 25-40% of their body weight before they start migration in order to make the long trek over land, and water.

They fly alone, often on the same path they have flown earlier in their life.

A male Ruby-throated hummingbird. I'm still learning how to capture photos of these quick little creatures as they dart around my feeder. Today I learned that the two coming to our feeder are both Ruby-throated hummingbirds. The one I posted previously is the female because she has a white throat. This one has been more elusive and the metallic red throat indicates it is a male. They are so amazing to watch!

Hummingbirds with their jewel-like colors and rapid wings are among the world’s smallest and most fascinating birds.

They normally vary in length from 7.5 to 13 cm, making their small stature instantly recognisable.

Despite their tiny size, hummingbirds are noted for their exceptional flying talents, including the ability to hover in mid-air, dart quickly and even fly backwards.

The nectar from flowers is an important element of the hummingbird’s diet. This high-energy, sugar-rich dietary supply feeds their strong metabolism and energy requirements.

We just added a pollinator garden to our yard and made sure to choose some plants that hummingbirds love. Maybe they'll invite their friends!
